Divorce Mediation
Couples who have made a decision to divorce often can use some assistance in sorting everything out.
The majority of my practice is divorce mediation. I help couples come up with a complete divorce agreement in a calm, respectful, well-informed and empowered process.
Perhaps nothing is yet resolved between the two of you. Or maybe you have already reached agreement on just about everything and simply want some help making sure it is complete and writing it up. I can assist you in either case. In the mediation process, I provide guidance through the necessary territory but you retain control over all decision making.
Divorce mediation has many benefits over other divorce approaches. It is usually done in person but can also be done online.
After 50 Divorces
I have helped many couples in all age brackets accomplish their divorce. Twenty-five years ago, people above the age of 50 accounted for just 1 in 10 divorces. Now it’s about 1 in 4. Divorce is difficult at any age, but for people over 50 it can raise particularly serious concerns about financial security. The closer you are to retirement, the less ability you have to recoup the financial losses that normally accompany divorce. At the same time, couples over 50 often have accumulated significantly more financial resources than younger couples and the equitable division of these is often complicated. As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, I am particularly well suited to mediate these divorces.
Collaborative Divorce
The collaborative divorce process is much more expensive and resource instensive than mediation. Therefore it is not commonly used. In collaborative divorce, each party is represented in negotiations by a lawyer who agrees to withdraw if a settlement is not reached and the matter needs to be resolved in court. Typically these negotiations occur without using a mediator, although one may be used. I am available to serve in this capacity.
Often other professionals assist in a collabortaive divorce process. As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA), I am available to serve in collaborative divorce sessions as a financial and/or tax specialist. I can help ensure all financial and tax issues are understood and carefully considered for the short term and long term.
